 Research

Before starting the design, we decided to understand the problem people face when walking in the dark. We conducted primary and secondary research. We want to understand how safe people feel walking alone in the dark, and what mechanisms, tools or strategies they subconsciously or consciously employ to alleviate any fear or discomfort.

5 Online Interviews

20 survey respondents

Affinity mapping based on online interviews

Key Findings

1. I think talking to someone on the phone creates a pretty good safety net when walking alone. You are less likely to be approached if someone knows you are on phone to someone else.

2. I won’t leave my house and walk alone after 9pm.

3. When I first arrived in Australia I would walk around with a knife out of fear of being in an unfamiliar place.

4. Being on a call with someone help makes me feel more calm

Problem Statement

Navigating the streets alone in the dark can be an unsettling experience for many. Temporary solutions involve subconsciously or actively employing a range of strategies or tools to alleviate any fear, vulnerability and potential dangers when walking home alone- such as calling a friend, holding keys in hand, sharing location with a friend etc.

How Might We develop a safety app which will empower users to feel comfortable, calm & confident walking alone in the dark.

Iteration After User Testing

My Chaperone alteration images

We removed the clunky white bar at bottom of screen and relocated features around the screen for a more easy to navigate and balanced aesthetic

We created options to add extra contacts that are easy to find and utilise
